More Funding Needed for Doctors Mental Health
On page 8 there is an article reprinted from the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Psychiatry dealing with the guilt suffered by medical personnel that lose patients. The authors suggest that more attention and funding needs to be focused on the mental health of doctors and nurses.
Doctor John Stewartson, from Auckland hospital comments on his own recent feeling when he lost a patient who attempted to suicide. "I felt I should have been able to do more. This poor woman was crying out for help, and first the mental health system failed her, then I failed to save her. I feel immense guilt, like I should have been able to do more."
